When you see a concerning ingredient listed near the end, the quantity is likely very small. When you see it near the top, the product contains a significant amount. This context matters when evaluating safety, dose determines the risk for most substances.

Understanding FDA Regulatory Status

Not all food ingredients are regulated the same way. The FDA classifies food substances into several categories, each with a different level of scrutiny:

GRAS, Generally Recognized As Safe

GRAS substances are considered safe based on a long history of common use in food (pre-1958) or on published scientific evidence. Examples include salt, vinegar, baking soda, and many spices. The GRAS designation means experts have concluded the substance is safe under its intended conditions of use.

Approved Food Additives

CSPI's ratings are independent of the FDA and are sometimes more conservative. When an ingredient has a CSPI "Avoid" rating but an FDA "GRAS" status, it often indicates that newer research has raised concerns not yet addressed by regulatory action.
